Maltese winery Delicata’s Gran Cavalier Syrah D.O.K. got a bronze medal at the 2019 International Wine Challenge (IWC), according to a press release sent to Business Malta. The Gran Cavalier range is Malta’s most awarded wine collection with 29 international awards.

Delicata is a full-bodied world-class red, made from hand-picked Maltese Syrah grapes and matured in 225-litre oak barrels.

Delicata’s 2017 Gran Cavalier Syrah was described using flavours of “blackberry, chocolate, coconut and oat spice,” being “balanced by fresh acidity, with dusty tannins” and made in an “oaky, well-structured style,” by the judges of the IWC.

The wine, in addition, has been rated on par with wines from the renowned appellations of Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie, where the Syrah grape is known to shine, and some heavy hitters exported by the big names from Australia’s top regions McLaren Vale, Barossa and Hunter Valley, the press release says.

The IWC, which is usually tagged as one of the world’s most meticulously judged wine competitions, was this year hosted in London.
